The Heart Health Institute offers

Outpatient Cardiac and Pulmonary, Congestive Heart Failure Exercise and Education, Diabetes Education, Lipid Clinic, Weight Management/Dietary services,

Yoga classes, Fitness Center and much more.

Programs are available for all levels of health - from patients recovering from cardiac events to the healthy individual seeking a clean, comfortable and supervised exercise facility. All rehabilitation and exercise clients receive one-on-one consultations to create a safe exercise program, determine heart disease risk factors and modification strategies and establish appropriate exercise and nutritional goals.

Heart Health Institute Staff

The Heart Health Institute is part of York Hospital's Heart Health Care service. Staff include Nurses, Exercise Physiologists, Physical Therapists, Respiratory Therapists, Registered Dietitians, Yoga Instructors, Certified CPR/First Aid Instructors, Social Workers and Certified Fitness Professionals. Staff supervise the Fitness Center at all times and are always available for questions and assistance. Professional and individual care is provided to all patients and members of the Heart Health Institute.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed to meet the needs of cardiopulmonary patients (including, but not limited to, those who have had a heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or Angina) and their families. The program combines education, exercise, nutritional counseling, stress reduction and behavior modification strategies. The goal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation is to help patients recover, resume their normal activities of daily life and develop positive lifestyle strategies to enhance their future health.

Congestive Heart Failure Exercise and Education Program

The Heart Health Institute offers a Congestive Heart Failure Exercise and Education Program that includes an educational lecture series with a variety of speakers, an initial evaluation and personal exercise prescription, supervised group exercise sessions, and a take-home video education series. Weight Management & Nutritional Counseling

The dietary counseling services of a Registered Dietitian are offered and include one-on-one nutritional counseling, healthy cooking classes, supermarket tours and weight management classes. One-on-one nutritional counseling is reimbursable through many insurance plans. The Institute's Weight Management Class is designed to provide long-term weight management education. This program will include a personal fitness evaluation, exercise prescription, weekly group workout session, group nutritional education sessions, stress relief and relaxation techniques. The group structure also provides an exceptional support system for individuals wishing to reach a more healthy weight. If interested, participants receive a discounted three-month membership to the Fitness Center.

Lipid Clinic

For those individuals whose cholesterol and triglycerides are not easily managed, their physician can refer them to the Lipid Clinic at the Heart Health Institute. This program combines the expertise of Lance L. Briggs, M.D., F.A.C.C., Cardiologist with Seacoast Cardiology Associates, P.A., Registered Nurses and a Registered Dietitian.

The Fitness Center

The Fitness Center at the Heart Health Institute has been designed to make every person feel comfortable. Our emphasis is not on pushing the body to the max, but rather, on steady improvements in the body, mind and spirit to pursue total wellness. We have created an environment in which people of all abilities can educate themselves about healthy exercise and pursue a fitness program in a comfortable, non-intimidating environment. Additionally, the Center is always staffed with a Fitness Expert so questions about specific equipment or exercise can be answered immediately. Of course, Staff is always available to help in the event of any sign of trouble.

Membership includes a one-on-one Get Fit Fitness Profile, individualized exercise prescription and as many orientations necessary to make the member feel comfortable with the exercise equipment. Exercise equipment includes treadmills, upright and recumbent stationary bikes, rowing machines, stairclimbers, elliptical trainer, NuStep, upper body ergometers, Nautilus strength training equipment, free weights and more. Aerobic Classes

The Heart Health Institute offers a variety of aerobic, strength, stretching and balance classes designed to meet the needs of all ages and abilities. Please call 207-351-3700 for class times and space availability.

"Strength For Life"
This group exercise class is designed for the senior participant who needs overall strengthening to help maintain their independence in daily living. The class is structured around chair-based exercise, while working on strength, balance, coordination and flexibility. Light weights and other modalities are incorporated to make the class fun and interesting.

"45 Minute Ultimate Workout"
This class gives participants a time efficient, total conditioning workout. You will work all muscle groups while keeping your heart rate elevated to burn fat and condition your cardiovascular system. A variety of props and modalities are incorporated into this 45-minute fun and effective class. You can get a body fat check prior to beginning the class and re-check monthly to monitor your progress!

An application and medical questionnaire are required prior to participating in classes. Physician clearance may be necessary.

Yoga Classes

The Heart Health Institute offers a full schedule of varying levels of Yoga:

  • "Introductory Yoga"
    A Yoga class appropriate for those who prefer a more gently paced class. An introduction to the practice of yoga, this class focuses on postures and relaxation techniques.
  • "Yoga Level I"
    A class for the person with no prior yoga experience or for the person who wants to refine their present practice.
  • "Yoga Level II"
    This class is designed for the person with prior Yoga experience and/or with a physically active lifestyle.
  • "Yoga for the Heart"
    A weekly class for the person with limited mobility who desires gentle stretching, breath work and guided relaxation.

Community Training Center

Patient Transportation

Offering rides to and from York Hospital services and area physician offices.
